Kurz je určen pro studenty bakalářského programu oboru Mediální studia. Základem kurzu bude práce s autentickými materiály (texty, podcasty, videa) a s ní spojený důraz na rozvoj schopnosti komunikovat, vést debatu a reflektovat probíraná témata (mediální jazyk a metafory, média a společnost, média a gender, média a AI, krize médií, role médií v autoritářských režimech a v demokracii, atd.) Studenti si mohou volit témata ze svého oboru, která je zajímají. Témata se také mohou měnit v souvislosti s aktuálním děním ve společnosti. Součástí kurzu bude také nácvik správného používání obtížnějších lexikálních a gramatických struktur, rozšíření slovní zásoby odborného jazyka. Důraz bude kladen na osvojení prezentačních dovedností v rámci akademické ústní prezentace.

The course is designed for undergraduate students of Media Studies. It assigns a central role to interaction with English authentic materials (texts, podcasts, videos), the emphasis being placed on the
students´ ability to communicate, debate and reflect on the topics discussed (media language and metaphors, media and society, media and gender, media and AI, media crisis, the role of media in authoritarian regimes and democracy, etc.) Students are encouraged to choose the topics from their field of study that they find interesting. Different topics for discussion may also be chosen in relation to current events in society. The course also introduces students to new vocabulary relevant to the field of media studies, to more difficult lexical and grammatical structures and to aspects of studying academic English. Emphasis will be placed on the acquisition of presentation skills in academic oral presentations.

Stupnice známkování:
0-50 % = F 51-60 % = E 61-70 % = D 71-80 %=C 81-90 %=B 91% a více=A
Vysvětlivky: A - výtečně (vynikající výkon pouze s drobnými chybami), B - velmi dobře (nadprůměrný výkon avšak s určitými chybami), C - dobře (celkově dobrý výkon s řadou výrazných chyb), D - uspokojivě (přijatelný výkon, ale se značnými nedostatky), E - dostatečně (výkon splňuje minimální požadavky), F – nedostatečně, neprospěl (je zapotřebí značné množství další práce)

1) Regular and active participation in the seminars; homework assignments submitted on due dates (20%)

Marking scale:
0-50% = F
51-60% = E
61-70% = D
71-80% = C
81-90% = B
91% and more = A
Explanations: A - excellent (excellent performance only with minor errors), B - very good (above-average performance but with some errors), C - good (overall good performance with a number of significant errors), D - satisfactory (acceptable performance, but with significant deficiencies), E - sufficient (performance meets minimum requirements), F - insufficient, failed (a considerable amount of additional work is required).

Sylabus -
V rámci kurzu se vždy budeme věnovat jednomu z vybraných témat oboru mediálních studií (témata mohou být obměněna/doplněna podle výběru a preferencí studentů) s následnou diskuzí.
Vybraná témata/okruhy slovní zásoby: Media Language and Metaphors (gatekeeper, mirror, etc.), Media and Society, Media and Gender, Media and AI, Media Crisis, Current Challenges, The Role of Media in Authoritarian Regimes and Democracy, etc.
Důraz bude kladen na rozvoj akademického jazyka v písemném projevu (hedging, reporting verbs,cause and effect, paraphrasing, etc. ) a ústním (5 minutová prezentace na vybrané téma, peer feedback).
Studijní materiály zajistí vyučující v průběhu semestru, budou k dispozici na platformě Moodle. Slouží výhradně ke studijním účelům pro zapsané posluchače kurzu Angličtina pro mediální studia II. Nejsou určeny k dalšímu šíření.

Every week we will focus on one of the topics related to media studies (topics can be changed or added according to the students´ choice or preferences) followed by a discussion and teamwork.
Topics/Vocabulary areas: Media Language and Metaphors (gatekeeper, mirror, etc.), Media and Society, Media and Gender, Media and AI, Media Crisis, Current Challenges, The Role of Media in Authoritarian Regimes and Democracy, etc.
Emphasis will be placed on the development of academic language: academic writing (hedging, reporting verbs,cause and effect, paraphrasing, etc. ) and academic speech (5 minute presentation on selected topic, peer feedback)
Materials will be provided by the teacher as the course progresses and will be available on the Moodle platform. They are used exclusively for study purposes for students enrolled in the English for Media Studies II course. Any circulation of the materials is prohibited.
