Kurz představuje úvod do jazyka medicíny, seznamující s původem lékařských termínů, jejich jazykovou analýzou a gramatickou strukturou (latinskou i řeckou). Takovéto porozumění odborným výrazům je předpokladem k jejich lexikálně i gramaticky správnému užívání.

The course is designed as an introduction into the language of medicine, showing the origins of the medical terms, its language analysis and grammatical structures (Latin as well as Greek). Such an understanding of the specialised terminology is essential for its correct lexical and grammatical usage.

Studenti se seznámí se strukturou lékařského latinského / řeckého termínu, naučí se analyzovat termín po stránce gramatické, slovotvorné, případně etymologické a následně termíny funkčně používat. Student tak bude lékařský termín chápat v širších jazykových i věcných souvislostech.

Students will familiarize themselves with the structure of the Latin and Greek medical terminology, they will learn to analyse the terms from the grammatical, morphological, and even etymological points of view and to use them functionally. They will further develop their knowledge through understanding the terms in the broader context of the language and the content.

Požadavky ke zkoušce -
Zápočet je udělen na základě zvládnutí dvou průběžných testů minimálně na 70%. Průběžné testy se konají on-line na platformě Moodle 3 a nelze je opakovat. V případě nesplnění podmínek je podmínkou zápočtu souhrnný zápočtový test (úspěšnost minimálně 70%, možno konat nejvýše 3 opravné testy). Zápočtový test se koná ve zkouškovém období.
Zkouška má ústní a písemnou část a je ji možno skládat ve třech zkouškových termínech (řádný a dva opravné), třetí termín probíhá formou komisionální zkoušky. Komisionální zkoušku je možno skládat pouze ve zvláštních termínech, které jsou k tomu určeny a patřičně označeny v SISu.

Credit is awarded based on passing two partial tests (pass 70%). The tests take place on-line on the Moodle 3 platform and cannot be retaken. In case of non-fulfillment of these requirements, the condition of the credit is a comprehensive credit test (success rate of at least 70%, maximum of 3 re-sittings). The credit test takes place during the examination period. The final exam can be taken on three exam dates (one regular and two re-sittings) The third attempt takes place in the form of a commission exam. The commission examination may be taken only on special dates, which are designated for that purpose and duly marked in SIS.

COURSE SYLLABUS:
Winter Term:
The development of medical terminology from a historical context; methods of study; program of the course. Basic Latin grammatical terminology. Latin word categories. Word forms. Flexion. Pronunciation and intonation. Medical vocabulary (Latin/Greek) in framework of particular disciplines; the context of the English language. Declension of Latin nouns and adjectives: 1st declension. Prepositions used with the accusative and the ablative case. Vocabulary - basic rules. Declension of Latin nouns and adjectives: 2nd declension. Ordinal numbers. The structure of an anatomical term.
TEST 1
Declension of Latin nouns: 4th declension.
Declension of Latin nouns: 5th declension. Substantivization of adjectives.
Declension of Latin nouns: 3rd declension - imparisyllaba (tumor - operatio - corpus).
Comparative and superlative forms
Declension of Latin nouns: 3rd declension - i-stems (auris, dens) and exceptions to the 3rd declension rules.
Revision of the 1st-5th declensions Latin nouns, and adjectives of 1st and 2nd declensions.

Combining all types of nouns with an adjective. Prepositional phrases. Revision.

Greek nouns in the Latin declension (3rd declension): ureter - basis - trauma; terminological classification of illness: -itis, -osis, -oma. Diagnosis clinica. Greek nouns in the Latin declension (1st declension): acne - diabetes
Latin adjectives of the 3rd declension. Third declension adjectives (revision).
Regular comparison of adjectives (comparative and superlative degrees).
TEST 1
Greek stems – their use in nouns and adjectives. Adverbs (a brief survey). Latin numerals. Declension of unus, duo, tres Greek numerals. Medical abbreviations. Names of drugs. Latin and Greek prefixes and suffixes. Combining forms. English equivalents. Dividing MT into component parts. Greek and Latin vocabulary understanding. Identification of an expression within the grammatical system. Practical use of Latin/Greek terms. Diagnostic procedures and surgical interventions in MT. Compounds (noun + noun; noun + adjective; noun + verb; adverb + verb; numeral + noun; multiplied compounds; hybrids). Derivatives. English derivation of a medical term on the basis of Latin.
Linguistic analysis of a complex medical term into morphological components; selecting meaningful units; creating medical concepts. MT practice.
