Management and Organizational Behavior
Fall 2024
Mgr. Dana Mudd, PhD

Course Mission and Objectives:
The effectiveness of organizations depends heavily on how organization manages its people. The success of an individual manager similarly depends on how he or she manages, interacts with, and relates to people. This course provides in-depth look at the people side of organizations. We will study how employees impact the effectiveness of their organization and how organizations and their managers impact the attitudes and behaviors of their employees. In this course you will learn how organizations can improve their effectiveness through better management of people and how individual managers can be more effective and successful in their careers.

The course has two basic objectives: The first one is to provide you with frameworks for understanding critical issues related to organizational behavior and understanding of how to apply those frameworks. The second one is to help you identify how you yourself can be more effective in organizational settings. To accomplish course objectives we will rely on a variety of activities. Learning will be interactive; each session will require your active participation.
Course Overview
As a general approach, I assume that the opportunity and responsibility for learning are in your hands. How successful you will be in this course is significantly affected by your activity and pro-activity in our learning community. We will achieve the course goals through reading, cases, exercises, role-plays, analytical discussions and presentations. The structure of the class will be highly interactive. To make this happen, each student must participate in the class activities. Extensive preparation, analysis and discussions will help you understand the major topics and issues.

Class participation: The structure of the class will be highly interactive. We will achieve the course goals through readings, cases, exercises, role-plays, analytical discussions and presentations. To make this happen, each student must participate in the class activities. Extensive preparation, analysis and discussions will help you understand the major topics and issues. Class participation grade will be based as much on the quality of your contributions as the quantity of your remarks.

Case Analysis: We will be analyzing 1 case study in this course. You are expected to prepare this case study for class discussion, by not just reading the case but also thinking through the guide questions that will be assigned. You must hand in a short analysis that addresses those questions no later than Dec. 4, 2023 prior the class! Your case analysis must be no longer that 3 double-spaced pages.

“Final Project”/Presentation
The key objective of the final project is to help participants study a real life situation in an organization of their choice using the concepts and themes from the course.
In terms of the Final Project structure: the project should render thorough description of the situation/issue in a broader organizational context (about 5 pages) and also present detailed analysis of the issue (about 5-10 pages).

The descriptive part of the project should be a comprehensive examination and description of the organization from an organizational behavior perspective, to include the organization strategy and structure, mechanisms of coordination and communication etc. And any potential selected issues, e.g. incentive systems, motivational approaches used, and strategies for conflict management and negotiation. In the descriptive part students can model „real-life“ stories, narrate situations, develop dialogues, to demonstrate lively the situation they will analyze in the second part of their project.

The analytical part of the Final Project should then focus on a thorough analysis of the organizational functioning and the issues selected and described in the first (descriptive) part. The students should analyse data and evidence available, try to find causes of the situation, apply concepts and frameworks discussed in class, as well as make recommendations for improvement in areas chosen by their team (e.g. how to improve organizational communication, culture, structure etc.)

Although the choice of specific project topic is left up to participants, at a minimum the project must overlap with at least one of the topics covered in the course.

Guidelines and timing for Final Projects:
 By October 30, 2024 each student should provide me with a one-page outline indicating an organization you have chosen to study, a brief description of the process or situation you will be exploring and data sources you expect to use.
 A preliminary outline of the entire report is due by November 30, 2024. The outline will not be graded.
 The report must be prepared by the end of December 2024. Presentations will be given in class January 7, 2025.
