Kurz je jednosemestrální, probíhá 1x týdně a je určen studentům s úrovní B2 a výše.
Kurz se zaměřuje na rozvoj a procvičování angličtiny prostřednictvím soudobého dění v anglofonních zemích. Hlavním cílem kurzu je poskytnout studentům prostor aktivně angličtinu používat jak v mluveném, tak v psaném projevu. V první polovině semestru se budeme zaměřovat na „expository style“ – shrnutí a prezentace, podíváme se i na strukturu research paper . V druhé polovině semestru se zaměříme na argumentační užití jazyka – argumentační esej a debaty. Vedle toho se každé hodině budeme věnovat určitému okruhu relevantní slovní zásoby a budeme také pracovat s rysy akademického stylu (hedging, paraphrasing atp.).
Tematicky se budeme věnovat nadcházejícím prezidentským volbám ve Spojených státech, debatě o následcích Brexitu v Británii, fenoménu kulturních válek a střetu mezi konzervatismem a liberalismem, fenoménu úniku informací (leaks) a seznámíme se také s vybranými osobnostmi a komentátory současné anglofonní mediální scény (Rory Stewart, Jon Stewart, John Oliver, Tucker Carlson, Jake Tapper, Yuval Noach Harari atp.) Shlédneme také vybrané debaty debatního klubu oxfordské univerzity dostupné na youtube. Tyto tematické okruhy budou sloužit především k procvičení angličtiny a lze je měnit či přizpůsobovat zájmům studentů.

This is a one semester course running 1x a week for students, whose level of English is B2 or higher.
The course focuses on developing and practising English in the context of current events in the Anglosaxon world. The main aim of the course is to provide students with space to actively use English in both its written and spoken forms. The first half of the semester will be focused on expository style – summary and presentation, we will also briefly look at the structure of a research paper. In the second half of the semester, we will focus on using the language argumentatively – argumentative essay and debates. Apart from that, each class will delve into a relevant area of vocabulary, and we shall also work on typical feature of academic English.
Thematically, the course will circle around the oncoming presidential elections in the US, the debate about the consequences of Brexit in Britain, the phenomenon of culture wars and the clash between liberalism and conservatism and the phenomenon of various information leaks. We shall also cover selected personalities and commentators active on the media scene (Rory Stewart, Jon Stewart, John Oliver, Tucker Carlson, Jake Tapper, Yuval Noach Harari etc.). We shall watch selected debates organized by the Oxford Union, which are available online. All these thematic areas have as their primary purpose the practice of English and they may be changed or adapted according to students´ preferences.

Cíl předmětu -
Studenti si procvičí pravidla psaní anglické argumentační eseje, seznámí se s pravidly vedení debaty oxfordského stylu a procvičí si je, naučí se psát shrnutí, procvičí si prezentování před publikem. Studenti se taktéž seznámí se základními principy akademického projevu a prohloubí si a upevní relevantní slovní zásobu. Nad rámec angličtiny studenti získají základní přehled o soudobých hlavních debatách probíhajících v anglofonních zemích a dostanou prostor sami se vyjádřit ke sporným tématům, vést vlastní debatu a diskusi.

Students will practice the rules for writing an English argumentative essay, they will learn and practise how to conduct a debate, learn how to write a summary and practice giving a presentation in front of an audience. Students will also learn the principles of academic style and deepen their knowledge of relevant vocabulary. Apart from the language itself, students will obtain an introduction into the current main debates and will be given space for their own take on controversial issues, debate them and formulate their own opinion.
