The aim of this 90-min. seminar is to acquaint students with the main features of the journalese style of the serious British media, and at the same time, with current themes and issues treated by the media. A special attention is paid to the issues related to education in the broadest sense in the UK and other English–speaking countries and to the vocabulary used in this field. The language skills on the C1 - C-plus - C2 level are developed, especially the competence of fast reading, formulation of the main ideas with critical assessment, as well as the speaking skills in oral presentations to the class with peer feedback. Students are required to fulfil five short writing assignments (including an article for a students’ periodical) and give one or two presentations (depending on the number of students enrolled) on issues from the press based on their reading of a number of articles on the internet, as well as to pass a final vocabulary test with a 60% passmark. In order to further cultivate the writing skill, attention is also given to the use of punctuation in English.
