During the 1980s and especially the 1990s, there was a vital boom in the applied demographic research. The applications of demography appear in a variety of spheres, from the civil service and politics to strategic studies, finances, trade and marketing, business economy and human resources up to the sphere of legal relationships. In the context of the new research topics, there was a considerable „softening“ of the border between demography and other fields of study. More often than ever before, experts in population problems appear outside the usual demographic field of study when solving practical problems. However, in this, they successfully use the approaches, methods and knowledge acquired by demography previously. Irrespective of relatively different conditions and habits of research in the cited areas of the application, there is a growing general interest in quality results of professional demographers’ research activities.

Arising from the integration of basic aspects of demographic research into selected spheres of the practice, the main objective of the course is to provide a view of the growing utilisation of demography and demographers when controlling the development of modern society and to help the students overcome the existing gap between academic research and practical activity.

Given the diversity of real conditions, the questions of practices and their solutions are to a large extent unique. This was why in the concept of the course a major place is occupied by case studies. Through them, the students are familiarised not only with possible spheres and specificities but also with general features of the application of demography.
