Annotation -
The aim of the course is to familiarize students with the issue of children's sports training, to determine the general starting points of this issue as a basis for training in later years. It is mainly about determining different approaches, forms and methods compared to adult training, to master the issue of age and developmental patterns and their importance. In other areas, the course deals with the long-term concept of training, general principles for children's training, the components of sports training and their form in this period. The subject also deals with supplementary questions such as relation to school, parents, etc.

Aim of the course -
  • Introduce students to the theoretical foundations of children's sports preparation, including age-related and developmental principles, differences between training children and adults, and the importance of sensitive periods in training.
  • Understand the long-term concept of sports training in children, the differences between early specialization and developmentally appropriate training, and the significance of versatility in young athletes' preparation.
  • Master general principles of children’s training, including social-interactional forms, relationships with children, the importance of training aids, and specific methods used in their sports preparation.
  • Learn to stimulate physical abilities in children (speed, endurance, strength, coordination, and flexibility), understand their diagnostics, and apply appropriate methods, tools, and forms in training practice.
  • Comprehend the specifics of technical, tactical, and psychological preparation in young athletes and integrate them into the overall training concept.
  • Gain knowledge about the legislative, organizational, and professional framework of sports preparation for talented youth and training programs aligned with philosophical and pedagogical principles.
  • Develop coaching competencies in the area of children’s sports preparation, including communication skills, training management, and collaboration with parents, schools, and clubs.
  • Learn the principles of talent identification in sports, its system and process, and understand the key stages and criteria for selecting talent in the context of developing sports performance.

Syllabus -

1. Introduction to the subject. General system of talent identification and selection. Children rights

2. Genetically predisposition of giftedness.

3. External and internal parameters of an athlete. Biological age, external conditions (family, school)

4. A model of sport talent. What a talent it means? Different types of a model of youth athlete as a talent.

5. Testing – parameters of a test – validity, reliability and stability and their reason for talent identification. Predictive cycles – how to create a useful prediction system

6. How to select an athlete – different models of talent selection. Practical examples of talent selection models – different models for different type of selection

7. Support of talent (family, clubs, school, government)

8. Children and Sports training – aims, tasks and basic terms: stages of children’s development, biological and chronological age, sensitive periods

9. Long term athletes development: early specialization, training corresponding with development, versatility, stages of training

10. Aspects of work with children - common principles of work with children: relations of adults to children, time utilization, training unit organization.

11. Specify of kids training: strength and power development, aims, stages, methods and tools of strength development. Speed and agility development, aims, stages, methods and tools of speed and agility development.

12. Specify of kids training: endurance development, aims, stages, methods and tools of endurance development. Coordination development, aims, stages, methods and tools of coordination development. Flexibility development, aims, stages, methods and tools of flexibility development

13. Technical preparation: stages and methods of skills development, Tactical preparation – stages and methods of tactical skills development. Psychological and mental preparation: motivation, arousal, flow.

Learning outcomes -

Learning outcomes

The student knows the specifics of ontogenetic development in target age categories and understands their importance for sports training of children and youth.

He knows the location of sensitive periods and can explain their essence. He can define the term biological age and explain its importance for children's training and identification of sports talents.

The student can explain the term long-term concept of sports training and understands all the main areas that are reflected in the selection of individual strategies of this concept. He can define the risks associated with early specialization and is able to define their influence on individual stages of sports training.

He knows the ontogenetic specifics of training individual motor skills and can apply these parameters when preparing specific exercises.

He understands specific developmental requirements for the area of acquiring technique and tactics in terms of goals, methods and forms. He knows the basic goals and approaches to psychological preparation in children.

The student knows the basic styles of coaching leadership and understands when and how to use these styles in children's training.

The student understands the ethics of the work of a children's coach and the related topics. He knows the basic problem areas of working with parents of children and knows how to organize meetings with parents.

The student knows the organization of child recruitment and understands the positive and negative aspects of individual approaches to child recruitment.
