Annotation
General aspects of surgical operations. Surgical infections. Hernias, breast surgery, thyroid surgery. Surgery of the digestive tract, particularly the oesophagus, stomach, duodenum, small intestine, colon and rectum, as well as surgery of the spleen, liver, portal hypertension, gallbladder and bile ducts, and pancreas. Acute abdominal emergencies, gastrointestinal bleeding, penetrating and non-penetrating abdominal injuries, hemoperitoneum, diagnosis and treatment of limb injuries.

Aim of the course

The aim of study (subject Surgery I):

The student will gain:

  1. Selected theoretical knowledge in general and special surgery, especially abdominal and traumatology.

  2. Practical knowledge and skills in abdominal surgery, general surgery, vascular surgery, intensive care, limb traumatology and plastic surgery.

Requirements to the exam

Credit

  • Each student must be educated in minimal knowledge.
  • A credit will be given on a base of 100% attendance at practical trainings, succeeding in passing final written test and pre-learning in Moodle.
  • Students must notify the Academic Department of Surgery of an any absence in a timely manner. The head of the department decides how the missed exercise will be replaced.

In the case of repeating a subject, the student is required to complete the pre-learning and the test. Practical lessons need to be completed only if they have not been previously undertaken.

Students in exchange programs (Erasmus, etc.) must complete the study obligation in full.

Themes of the practical trainings

  1. General surgery: hernias surgery, breast surgery.
  2. General surgery: small bowel, colon and perianal surgery.
  3. General surgery: appendicitis, cholelithiasis, acute abdomen.
  4. Vascular surgery: examination of arteries and veins.
  5. Traumatology: distorsion, luxation, fractures upper and lower extremity.
  6. Traumatology: wound management, immobilization principles, joint puncture.
  7. Plastic surgery: plastic surgery, burns, frost bites.
  8. Intensive care: surgical intensive care unit.
  9. Final lecture.

 

It is necessary to have: suitable shoes, a clean white coat and a name tag (without this, students can be excluded from the practical lesson)!

Detailed description and division of students into groups (see the schedule board on the ground floor opposite the elevators, Bedrna's pavilion, building No. 21, Dept. of Surgery).

Students will look for a specific teacher according to the schedule at the departments.
