Aim of the course
In the summer semester, lectures are focused on special neurology: multiple sclerosis and other demyelinating diseases, neurodegenerative diseases (including Parkinson's disease and other extrapyramidal diseases), cognitive disorders, epilepsy (including childhood epilepsies) and other seizure disorders, migraine and other headaches, brain and spinal cord tumors, neurotrauma, neuroinfections (including brain and cerebellar abscesses), peripheral nerve disease, myopathies, myotonia, myasthenia, vertebrogenic diseases, perinatal brain damage and developmental anomalies. In the seminars/practical training, students will review neurological examination, syndromology and topical diagnosis of the nervous system and become more familiar with examination methods in neurology (neuroradiology and neurosonography, EEG, EMG and evoked potentials, and examination of cerebrospinal fluid).

Requirements to the exam

Credit:

· Participation in practical training with a maximum of 1 (one) excused absence, provided that the content of the relevant practical training is mastered. · Mastery of basic examination methods in Neurology, syndromology, and topical diagnosis of the nervous system verified by preparation of a credit medical record.

Exam: · Practical exam: An independent examination of a patient, determination of syndromological and topical diagnosis, independent preparation of an examination medical record. In case of failure, the student loses the examination term (valid also repeatedly). · Oral exam: Answering 3 questions (1 from general neurology including examination methods and 2 from special neurology). In case of failure, the student loses the examination term (valid also repeatedly).

Lectures  (15h)
Lecturers

Prof. Roman Herzig, MD, PhD ·Assoc. Prof. Edvard Ehler, CSc. · Assoc. Prof. Zbyšek Pavelek. MD, PhD · , prof. Robert Rusina, MD, PhD

The lectures complement or develop the required literature. They capture the current trends in the field, and changes in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of diseases of the central and peripheral nervous system, which are not yet the content of existing textbooks due to their timeliness. The lectures highlight the minimum knowledge of the field that is a prerequisite for successful completion of the summer semester examination.

During the seminars/practical exercises, students will review neurological examination, syndromology, and topical diagnosis of the nervous system and become more familiar with examination methods in neurology. Students will first examine patients under the supervision of the teacher, then independently after dividing them into several subgroups. Teachers demonstrate patients with typical cases of diseases of the nervous system. Students are reminded of the minimum knowledge on the topic, which is a prerequisite for the successful completion of the credit (and subsequently the exam).

Practical courses:

1. Repetition of neurological examination.

2. Repetition of syndromology (disorders of the 1st and the 2nd motor neuron, intracranial hypertension syndrome, meningeal syndrome, sensitivity, spinal cord and brainstem syndromes). Examination of patients with a teacher.

3. Repetition of syndromology (extrapyramidal syndromes, cerebellar and vestibular syndrome, syndrome of the cerebellopontine angle, cortical syndromes). Examination of patients with a teacher.

4. Micro lesson: Neuroradiology and neurosonography – indications and demonstration of findings.

5. Micro lesson: Examination of cerebrospinal fluid – indications and demonstration of findings in particular patients.

6. Micro lesson: EEG – indications and demonstration of findings in particular patients. Examination of patients, pathophysiological analyses with a teacher.

7. Micro lesson: EMG, evoked potentials – indications and demonstration of findings in particular patients. Examination of patients, pathophysiological analyses with a teacher.

8. Independent examination of patients with syndromological and topical conclusion.

9. Independent examination of patients with syndromological and topical conclusion.

10. Independent examination of patients, credit medical record including syndromological and topical diagnosis. Review of the medical record by the teacher. Credit.
