Seminars and practicals will focus on gastroenterology, geriatrics, nephrology, acute and intensive care including ABCDE approach.

Aim of the course

Outcomes (knowledge and clinical skills):  

1) Knowledge of the basics of gastroenterology and digestive endoscopy.

2) Knowledge of basic nephrology and hemodialysis treatment.  

3) Knowledge of the principles of the intensive care. 

4) Knowledge of basic characteristics and specifics of the field of geriatrics. 

5) Practicing clinical examination of the patient, differential diagnosis and choice of therapeutic procedures. 

6) Acute patient examination training using the ABCDE approach.

7) Repeat the description and interpretation of ecg curves.

Requirements to the exam

Requirements for credit 

Participation in seminars and practicals. 

A maximum of two excused absences are allowed, one for practicals and one for seminars. Excused absences must be sent only in advance in the excuse form. In case of a higher number of absences, the situation will be resolved individually with the Head of the Department of Internal Medicine. 

 

Test (Moodle)

scope of test questions: gastroenterology, nephrology, geriatrics, ABCDE approach - within the scope of the state examination questions and the graduate profile and description and interpretation of ecg curves within the range defined by the graduate profile.

required success rate ≥ 70 %, 3 attempts. If you complete all tests before the seminar on time, a 10% bonus will be added to your test result.

During any credit or examination test at the Department of Internal Medicine, the following practices are not allowed:

· To use the dedicated tablets in other mode than the Moodle test application.

· To use Moodle otherwise than for the given test. In particular it is not allowed to use Moodle personal profile, Moodle chat, Moodle personal files and Moodle calendar during any credit or exam test.

· Use of any electronic devices except for the dedicated tablets. Other electronic devices include, and but are not limited to mobile phones, smart watches, smart glasses and any other recording systems, smart rings, tablets, laptops, headphones, calculators.

· Any other aids and auxiliary materials.

· Any communication with other students.

If any student is convinced of any form of misconduct, described above or other, he or she will be graded as failed without the possibility to re-take the test in the given academic year

Practicals: 

Students will complete 12 practical exercises focusing on the following topics: 

Digestive endoscopy (1 practical) 

Students will visit a digestive endoscopy unit to learn about the range of procedures performed there and their indications. The practicum will include working with a digestive endoscopy simulator. 

Gastroenterology (3 practicals) 

During practicums in standard wards of the 2nd Department of Internal Medicine – Gastroenterology, students will learn about the most common diseases of the digestive tract by presenting individual cases. 

Intensive care (2 practicals) 

During practicals at the intensive care unit students will learn the basic principles and procedures of intensive care through case presentations. 

General Internal Medicine (2 practicals) 

The general internal medicine practicals will be held in all standard wards of internal medicine departments or in the workplaces of each teacher. During the practicals students will focus on clinical examination, results of ancillary examinations, differential diagnosis and therapeutic procedures. 

Geriatrics (1 practical) 

Practicals will take place in the 3rd Department of Internal MedicineMetabolic Care and Gerontology. During the practicals, students will learn the principles and procedures of geriatric care through the presentation of model cases. 

ABCDE approach (1 practical)

Training of acute patient examination using ABCDE approach. 

Nephrology, clinical cases (1 practical)

Practical, which will take place in the inpatient department of the Nephrology Clinic, will focus on the demonstration of typical cases of kidney disease.   

Nephrology, renal replacement therapy (1 practical)

Practical, which will take place at the Hemodialysis Center of the Nephrology Clinic, will focus on familiarizing with the environment of the department and the basic principles of hemodialysis therapy.
