Annotation -
The aim of the course is to make students familiar with the basics of the Czech language system (vocabulary, grammar). Students will learn how to use the language in everyday situations (communication skills), they will be able to read and understand simple texts in Czech.

Syllabus -

1. Greetings and basic social phrases; basic vocabulary (university, faculty; city); Where are you from? (Countries).
    Czech sounds; Czech Alphabet; Verb „být“- „to be“; Personal Pronouns; Numerals 1- 10; Demonstrative pronoun „ten“; Gender of Czech nouns,nominative; Adjectives; Possessive pronouns; Adverbs.

2. Days and Months; Seasons; My Flat. In a Restaurant.
    Adverbs of place; Present tense of Czech verbs, conjugation; Accusative singular.

3. My Day; Shopping; Clothing; Holidays - Christmas.
    Verb „umět, znát, vědět - to know how/to know“; Verb of motion „ jít, jet - to go“; Accusative of personal pronouns; Nominative plural.

4. My Family. My Study Programme.
    Indefinite and negative pronouns and adverbs. Addressing people-vocative. Czech Numerals (up to 10).

5. Travelling; Asking about the Way.
    Questions „Kde?, Kam? - Where?, Where to?“; Locative-singular;Genitive -singular; revision- accusative.

6. Hobbies and Interests. Holiday - Easter.
    Revision: gen.,acc.,loc.; verb“mít rád…,rád… - to like“; modal verbs.

7. At the Doctor´s; the date; When were you born?
    Past tense; Ordinary numbers; perfective and imperfective verbs; Dative-singular.

8. Human Body (basic description).
    Expressing future; Instrumental -singular; Reflexive pronouns.

Learning outcomes -

After completing the coursestudents will be able to:  

 • communicate in everyday situations – greet people, introduce themselves and  
    others, respond to basic questions; 

 • share personal information (name, place of residence, nationality, profession, age); 

 • communicate about time and orientation in space; 

 • talk about their family, appearance, clothing, health, free time, emotions, and habits; 

 • shop, order food and drinks, ask about prices, arrange a meeting or visit; 

 • communicate in emergency situations and call for help (health, loss, repair); 

 • fill out a simple form, write a short invitation, an advertisement, or personal text; 

 • understand short written and spoken texts (e.g. announcements, conversations,  
    emails, menus) and respond to them; 

 • express themselves in the present tense using imperfective verbs (including irregular,  
    modal, and reflexive verbs); 

 • express needs, wishes, feelings, opinions, and preferences using the verbs to like, to  
    want, to need, to have to, to be able to; 

 • understand texts in the past and future tenses, but still have difficulty to use these tenses actively;  
 
• recognize when to use the accusative case and use nouns and adjectives in their  
   correct forms;

• use appropriate forms of addressing people (Mr Nováček = pane Nováčku;      
  associated professor (F) paní docentko) in the correct form (vocative); 

• understand texts with nouns and adjectives in other case forms, but won't be able to form them actively;  

• use a basic repertoire of prepositions, but mostly without reference to the correct case form; 

 • ask not only Yes/No questions, but also Wh- questions;   

Notes: 

 • The output level corresponds approximately to level A1 according to the CEFR; 

 • Students are able to communicate using very simple, short sentences and understand their communication partner if they are able to do the same; otherwise, they are able to pick up key words in order to understand the topic of the conversation.
