The course analyses the basic theoretical standpoint of play, its signs, developmental stages and the functions of children?s play. Attention focuses on the contribution of play to the group of children in a modern, child-centred nursery school. It suggests several diagnostic guidelines ensuing from play that are important for the choice of adequate approach methods to individual children. It analyses play and learning, its cognitive and social role in the development of the preschool child. In practice, students observe and then analyze play, prepare reviews of current journal articles and books related to the given topic.
