Encounters with the Other: Jews, Christians, and Muslims in Dialogue and Interaction

This course will explore the theme of Abrahamic encounter, that is, the interaction and exchange between
adherents of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, both in its bilateral and trilateral forms. Taken into consideration will
be not only recent formal statements, but also reflections by theologians, scholars, and reflective practitioners
from all three faith traditions. In addition to theological matters, the topics under discussion will include issues of
social, political, and ecological relevance.
The aim of the course is to understand how a religious other is thematized in theological talk in relation to
contemporary life.
Requirements for passing the course: active participation at class (incl. assigned readings), oral presentation,
final essay.

In this seminar the students will learn basic interpretive skills, focusing on one selected religious studies text (such
as M. Eliade, Sacred and Profane, R. Otto, The Idea of the Holy etc.) which they will read, interpret and comment
on together in seminar discussions, employing relevant secondary literature and other tools and resources of
religious studies.
