Currently, environmental politics shares space with all the major issues that are commonly reported by the media. This raises the question – how then, to think about the environment? This course on “Environmental Politics” is aimed at helping students develop a critical lens on various environmental issues, and gain a more nuanced understanding of the many dimensions of environmental politics – in different geographical contexts, as well as in relation to different thematic areas. Each class of the course will be focused on a specific theoretical or empirical theme – e.g. Political Ecology, Postcolonial Environmentalism etc. In some of the classes documentary films on these topics will be screened as part of the lecture. The first part of the course is an introduction to environmental political theories that will help students think more critically and in a more multi-perspectival way. The second part of the course focuses on the intersections between politics and specific environmental issues. Its geographical focus moves from the local/regional to the global – the course will explore environmental issues that have been critical to the politics of Czechia and post-communist countries in Europe, as well as those such as climate change that have involved the entire globe. The course also includes an emphasis on postcolonial approaches to the solution of environmental problems, and discusses these with regard to the geographical context of India. As such, the course also offers value for those wishing to understand the tradeoffs and convergences between environmental conservation and development. |
