The course focuses on international migration in terms of its portrayal in traditional media. In the theoretical part, students will learn about the framing of migration issues in European media. In particular, we will focus on the following questions: what discourses, agenda setting and approaches are prevalent or underrepresented in the coverage of migration and the adaptation of immigrants in Europe. How journalists report on the coexistence of super-diverse European societies at different scale levels. How the linguistic aspects of media messages influence the perception of migration and its actors by the recipients. In the practical part, students will put the acquired knowledge and skills into practice through their own framing analysis of a selected migration “case” reported by media publishing in the student's mother tongue, which they will present. The course combines lectures with discussions, group work and interactive techniques.
