Anatomy and physiology of the visual system; optical requirements for optimal vision; refractive errors: examination and correction; accomodation; central and peripheral vision; electrophysiology of vision; orbit; outer segment of the eye: lids, lacrimal apparatus, conjunctiva; cornea and sclera; vitreous humor and uvea; pathology of posterior segment of the eye and its linkage to systemic disorders; glaucoma: diagnostics and therapy; cataract: diagnostics and therapy; ocular trauma: superficial injuries of the eye and laceration of periocular tissues, blunt trauma, penetrating and perforating injuries, chemical burns, radiation injuries; strabismus and commonest inherited anomalies of the eye: diagnostics and treatment; infectious disorders and the eye; the eye and nervous system; red eye, pain in ophthalmology, slow and acute visual loss: differential diagnostics.

Output:

1. Student obtains theoretical knowledges in structure and function of the visual system.

2. Student obtains theoretical knowledges in etiopatogenesis, diagnostics and treatment of disorders of the eye and visual system.

3. Student obtains basic practical skills in diagnostics and therapy of ocular disorders.

Credit:

· Attendance on practical classes with max. 1 apologized absence providing student manages content of this practical class.

· Managing of basic examination and treatment methods validated by practical exam.

· Practical exam consists in examination of the patient with analyse of the clinical finding, diagnostics and treatment possibilities. Each student becomes moreover question regarding examination techniques in ophthtalmology.

Final examination:

credit, oral exam: triplet of questions (outer and anterior segment of the eye; posterior segment of the eye; strabology and neuroophthalmology).

Lectures complement or amplify compulsory literature. They inform about up-to-date trends in ophthalmology, improvements in diagnostics, treatment and prophylaxis of visual system disorders, that are not yet included into textbooks. Lectures advise of minimal knowledges in ophthalmology, that are essential for passing the final examination.

1. Anatomy and physiology of the visual system. Optical requirements for optimal vision, refractive errors, accomodation, color vision. Central and peripheral vision, electrophysiology of vision. Orbit, lids, lacrimal system.

2. Conjunctiva, uvea, vitreous, posterior segment diseases.

3. Cornea, sclera, cataract, glaucoma.

4. Ocular trauma. Neuroophthalmology.

Practical classes consist of two parts. In the first part, students become acquainted with most important topics in ophthalmology inclusive differential diagnostics and treatment methods in basic symptoms of ocular disorders in form of seminars. Seminars advise of minimal knowledges in various topics, that are essential for passing the final examination. In the second part, students are devided into several small groups and work together with educators in general and special ambulancies and in-patient departments, where a typical cases are presented and the patients are examined/treated.

1. Introduction I. and II.: course of examination of patient, general symptomatology of outer and anterior segment disorders. Practical classes: examination techniques in ophthtalmology.

2. Refractive errors: correction inclusive surgical techniques. Practical classes: Work in general ambulance or in-patient department: application of eye drops and ointments, irrigation of the eye, first aid and basic treatment methods.

3. Sydrom of „red eye“. Practical classes: demonstration of typical cases and examination/treatment of patients in general and special ambulancies and in-patient department.

4. General disorders and the eye. Practical classes: demonstration of typical cases and examination/treatment of patients in general and special ambulancies and in-patient department.

5. Infectious disorders and the eye. Practical classes: demonstration of typical cases and examination/treatment of patients in general and special ambulancies and in-patient department.

6. The eye and the nervous system. Practical classes: demonstration of typical cases and examination/treatment of patients in general and special ambulancies and in-patient department.

7. Ophthalmosurgery. Practical classes: demonstration of typical cases and examination/treatment of patients in general and special ambulancies and in-patient department.

8. Strabismus: examination and diagnostics. Practical classes: examination methods in strabology examination of patients with strabismus.

9. Complex care of visually handicapped and blind patients. Practical classes: examination techniques, prescription of optical and electronic aids, examination of patients.

10. Acute visual loss. Consultation of uncertain fields to the exam. Practical exam. Credit.
