The subject introduces the main language principles of medical terminology system. During classes students practise the understanding of authentic Latin phrases (on authentic anatomical and clinical materials) and learn how to form the phrases, using the Latin grammar system and adequate vocabulary. Essencial part of vocabulary is formed by Latin and Greek word stems. Main principles of medical terminology word formation are introduced on authentical dentistry materials. Entry requirements: no prerequisites Outcomes: 1. the student gets an overview of the temporary stage of Latin and international medical terminology 2. the student acquires basic practical skills in understanding and forming clinical terms and the diagnoses 3. the student will understand simple clinicopathological diagnoses and anatomical terms in Latin

Conditions to gain CREDIT:

 

Student has to successfully pass all the tests and the Credit test.

As for attendance, it is permitted to miss one practical class. If more, the reason for the absence must be confirmed by an official document.

The credit test consists of medical phrase translation.

Students have 3 chances to pass the credit test. The 1st date (during the lastpractical classes) is obligatory for all students. If a student does not come (without an officially confirmed reason), he/she fails and loses the 1st chance.

During the winter examination period, several dates for the 2nd attempt will be posted in the SIS, from which a student can choose. For those who do not pass (or do not come for) the 2nd attempt, the 3rd (i.e. last) attempt will be organized in September.

 

CONDITIONS TO PASS THE FINAL EXAMINATION:

The final examination consists of medical phrase translation and etymological explanation of medical terminology. The final examination includes all the materials provided in winter semester.

There are 3 chances for the final examination.

Dates will be posted in the SIS. A student has to sign up (or cancel) for the chosen date.

Practical courses:

The aim of the subject is to understand medical terminology phrases, The students are expected to use all the materials provided on the Faculty web page.

 

Classes content:

1. Introduction to the subject: the importance of Latin terminology for the study of medicine, pronunciation and spelling rules.

The system of Latin grammar for nouns (stem and suffix; case, number, gender) in relation to other European languages.

Unit 1 - Substantives and Adjectives of the 1st declension.

 

2. Unit 2 Substantives and Adjectives of the 2nd declension. Anatomical terminology. Unit 6. Introduction to Pathological and clinical terminology. Greek bases I.

 

3. Unit 3 – 4th -5th  declension + 1st and 2nd declension adjectives.

Unit 7 – pathological and clinical terminology. Greek bases II. Dental diagnoses.

 

4. Unit 4 – 3rd declension nouns + the collocation of 1st and 2nd declension adjectives. Unit 7 – diagnoses.

Test I – Greek bases I, II.

 

5. Unit 5 – Substantives of the 3rd Declension (-ī- stem).

Unit 8 – prefixes (periodontium/paradontitis/interdental X intradental,…)

 

6. Unit 6 - 3rd declension adjectives. Typical anatomical phrases.

Unit 8 - Greek bases III.

Test II – Unit 1 - 5

 

7. 

Unit 7 - 3rd declension nouns of Greek origin. Main groups of the suffixes (terminology of inflammations, degenerative diseases and tumours). Examples in clinical and pathological reports.

Unit 9 – Word formation (carcino-genes/stomato-rrhagia/odont-algia,..)

Test III – Greek bases I, II, III

 

8. Unit 8 + Unit 9. Examples in medical and pathological reports.

 

9. Unit 9. Preparing for the Credit test.

Test IV – understanding clinic-pathological terms.

 

10. Credit Test. Review and practice – all grammar, preparation for the Final Exam.
