The Technology Transfer Manager - Junior (TTM-J) course is the first of three levels of Charles University's educational program focused on education in the area of commercialization of research and development results and transfer of knowledge and technology from the academic to the commercial sphere. The development and pilot implementation of this programme was financed by the European Social Fund and the state budget of the Czech Republic through the Operational Programme Prague Adaptability, Priority Axis 17.1.

Aim of the course

The aim of this course is to provide students with a basic overview of the commercialisation of research and development results obtained at academic and university institutions and the ways, methods and techniques of knowledge and technology transfer between the academic and commercial spheres.

Requirements for students

The course has no specific requirements for the audience in terms of background knowledge and orientation in the field of knowledge and technology transfer. It is only assumed that the candidate has successfully completed high school/college and is currently working in an academic institution. The only prerequisite for participation in the course is an open mind and a sincere interest in the issue of commercialization of R&D results.

Course content

This introductory course consists of fourteen learning modules (+ introductory text and exit test). Their content follows the curriculum recommended in 2009 by the Certified Transnational Technology Transfer Manager (Cert-TTT-M) project outcomes as a starting point for the upcoming European Continuous Professional Development (CPD) certification in Knowledge and Technology Transfer (KTT) in accordance with the European Qualification Framework (EQF).

The course modules are divided into two groups. The first seven modules cover the necessary basic knowledge needed to understand the following modules. These modules focus on:

providing a basic insight into K&T transfer (module TTM-J-1),

presenting the concept of knowledge economy and the importance of commercialisation of R&D results (module TTM-J-2),

characterization of current entities operating in the field of technology transfer (module TTM-J-3),

protection of intellectual property (module TTM-J-4),

a description of where to look for financial resources (module TTM-J-5),

the specific procedure in the initiation phases of commercialisation of own R&D results (module TTM-J-6),

a description of the necessary knowledge and skills for a successful commercialisation process (module TTM-J-7).

The second group of seven modules provides the basic knowledge and skills for acquiring the competences defined in the Cert-TTT-M project as necessary for successful work in the field of Knowledge and Technology Transfer. These are:

Information analysis (module TTM-J-8),

guidance on how to communicate (module TTM-J-9),

Negotiation (module TTM-J-10),

familiarisation with commercial activities (module TTM-J-11),

basics of marketing (module TTM-J-12),

prerequisites for setting up a business (module TTM-J-13)

management and financing of innovation projects (module TTM-J-14).

Course structure

The course consists of an introductory seminar, three months of distance learning, a final test and a final discussion.

The course starts with an initial half-day seminar. During the course of the seminar, the students are introduced to the structure of the course, the didactic methods used and the teaching techniques. The individual teaching modules and their context will be briefly introduced and the distance education tutors will be introduced.

The educational core of the course consists in the distance learning of the modules described above. Assignments and recommended self-tests are embedded in the modules. Both expert tutoring and technical support will be provided to the students while studying them. Successful completion of the final test is a prerequisite for obtaining a certificate of completion of the course, as well as for possible advancement to the follow-up course TTM-S.

The final discussion will take place after the conclusion of the distance access. The date will be announced in the electronic environment Moodle. During the discussion, the authors and the course organisers will answer any questions from the participants and listen to their feedback on the material presented, the didactic procedures used, the teaching technique and the applicability of the knowledge and skills acquired in the specific conditions of the academic departments that sent the participants to the course. After this discussion, certificates of completion will also be presented to the participants who have successfully passed the final test.

Didactic approach

Experience with teaching knowledge transfer and technology transfer shows that some listeners - especially those coming from areas quite distant from the subject matter - find the explanation of the subject matter dry. Therefore, in order to enliven the interpretation and make the material more accessible, the authors have chosen a didactic approach based on the interconnection of individual educational modules by means of comic scenes. Their four heroes Matěj, Věra, Rudolf and Rosťa, who to some extent represent prototypical listeners, will accompany them throughout their study of this module. It remains for the listeners to judge to what extent the authors have succeeded in fulfilling their intention.

Final test

Some course modules include a self-test in addition to the exercises, but this does not count towards the final assessment. Only the successful completion of the last test in the final module is necessary for the successful completion of the whole course.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, students should have a basic understanding of knowledge and technology transfer between academia and commerce. They should understand

the importance of the application of scientific knowledge to commercial activities and the continuous introduction of innovation for the competitiveness of the economy of a modern state,

the importance of intellectual property protection in the commercial exploitation of knowledge and technology.

They should also be familiar with the procedures necessary for the successful transfer of knowledge or technology into commercial practice and be familiar with

the different ways of interaction between academic and commercial actors,

innovation scenes in the Czech Republic and the EU,

the role of innovation centres, knowledge and technology transfer offices, business incubators and science and technology parks in the process of knowledge and technology transfer and exploitation,

basic principles and legal and economic frameworks of business activities,

basic management and financing pathways for innovation projects.

Within the framework of the acquired knowledge, students should be able to

assess their abilities and opportunities to participate in the process of commercial exploitation of their scientific knowledge and technology,

complete a "Discovery/Invention Notice" and enter into a dialogue with knowledge and technology transfer professionals with a view to commercially applying the results of their R&D activities.

Study period

The average study time for one learning module is 2 - 4 hours. This means that the entire course, including the introductory seminar and the final discussion, should take approximately 60 hours to complete.

Certificate

Graduates who successfully pass the final test will be issued a certificate of successful completion at the follow-up discussion seminar.

Follow-up courses

Successful graduates of the TTM-J course can continue to the second level of the training programme with the follow-up course TTM-S "Scientific Entrepreneurship", or, after completing this course, to the third level with the TTM-E course, in which the training takes the form of an individual project.
