Instructor: Mike Baugh<br> Email: robert.michael.baugh@ruk.cuni.cz<br> Phone: 605 255 696<br> <br> <br> <br> This is a practical class whose goals are threefold:<br> 1.) to improve our abilities as translators from Czech to English<br> 2.) to prepare you for the daunting English translation section of the MA státnice<br> 3.) to give you a portfolio that you can show potential employers and customers<br> <br> Some of you are already professional translators working with English as the target language. This is a testament to both your natural skills as translators and the ones you have developed in Charles University’s translation program. Translators, however, always improve with experience – so by the end of the semester you should be even better. While this course should help eliminate some of the more subtle mistakes in your work that typify non-native English translations, I also view this class as a safe laboratory to experiment with techniques and approaches– moving away from strict translation to ‘value-added translations’ that anticipate the difficulties audiences with little knowledge of the Czech Republic face when reading them.<br> <br> Texts chosen to meet the first goal will often be authentic Czech texts that Nakladatelství Karolinum needs translated into English; we will also be looking at the type of texts that often appear on the MA exam; you will be responsible for finding interesting texts for your portfolios.<br> <br> The nice thing about translating is that people only get better as they get older. Experience counts. So it is in your best interest to come to every class and do every assignment to gain the experience.<br> <br> Final grades will consist of:<br> 1/3 Three technical-translation assignments<br> 1/3 Final exam<br> 1/3 Portfolio (consisting of three translations that you can polish over the course of the semester)<br> <br> As the class meets on Monday, all translation assignments must be uploaded to Google Classroom by noon on Sunday, so I will have adequate time to edit and mark them before class.<br> <br> |
