For administrative purposes the essay deadline itself is 1 month before the grade must be entered. Thus if you completed the course at either the end of January or May 2023, your deadline is (approximately) 14 August 2024 (i.e., 1 month before the end of the academic year). Essays presented up to two weeks late will be marked and docked one grade; essays submitted after that will not be accepted. Stručná anotace předmětu <br> přednáška: <br> Přednáška se zabývá základními tendencemi v procesu formování americké a kanadské literatury od jejich <br> počátků do konce Války Severu proti Jihu (1865) a vytvoření kanadské Konfederace (1867). Kombinuje analýzu <br> základních historických tendencí vývoje americké a kanadské kultury (střet kultur při kolonizaci, americký puritanismus, <br> osvícenství a vztah kultury a politiky v době americké revoluce, problematika otroctví a jeho zrušení, příčiny občanské <br> války, kulturní vývoj Kanady po britskoamerické válce) s důrazem na literární díla koloniálního období, doby revoluce, <br> amerického romantismu (historického románu a tvorby tzv. transcendentalistů) a počátky moderní poezie, na jejich <br> nejvýznamnější představitele, zejména Washingtona Irvinga, J.F. Coopera, Nathaniela Hawthorna, Hermana Melvillea, <br> Walta Whitmana a Emily Dickinson. <br> Tematické okruhy (pro přednášku i seminář):<br> 1. Střet kultur při kolonizaci severní Ameriky a jeho zobrazení v dobových textech<br> 2. Americký puritanismus - historiografie a poezie<br> 3. Americké osvícenství a obrození náboženství v 18. stol.<br> 4. Politika, žurnalistika a literatura v době revoluce a tzv. rané republiky<br> 5. Americký romantismus - gotická próza, historický román, romantická filozofie<br> 6. Pozdní romantismus v USA (Hawthorne a Melville)<br> 7. Počátky moderní poezie (Whitman, Dickinson)<br> seminář: <br> Analýza vybraných kanonických děl americké literatury 17., 18. a 19. století se zaměřuje jak na jednotlivé texty, tak na širší <br> otázky: historický a politický kontext, společenské a kulturní změny. Hlavní důraz se klade na puritánské dědictví, <br> romantismus, transcendentalismus a poezii Walta Whitmana a Emily Dickinson.
