Combined Skills 1 and Combined Skills 1 MAER are designed to be of value to all second-year students, including both those aiming for MA degrees and students who will continue towards PhD degrees. CS1 combines development of oral presentation skills with production of a “practice” or initial research proposal, with preparation for writing MA or DPW papers in mind (though of course the proposed project may change before DPW).  It is possible in some cases to develop the position paper from AW2 or RW2 to meet the extended requirements of a research proposal, or the student may choose to change the topic.  The CS1 paper may also be a Second-Year Research Fellowship Competition submission. Students receive comprehensive peer feedback on their ideas throughout the semester and are encouraged to discuss their proposed projects with any interested economist.

Combined Skills 1 MAER is the same course, but adds support towards writing the MA Thesis.  This support consists of one 3-hour class period fully focused on the work, including extended opportunities to ask the instructor both individual and group questions about the language and style of the paper, and formalized peer input on the papers. The defense is also addressed. Students also have one 20-minute consultation with the instructor specifically on the MA Thesis.  This course is challenging in that the students should write an initial/practice Dissertation Proposal in addition to developing their MA Thesis.  No ASC grade is assigned to the MA Thesis – we are here to support students in developing the paper and their defense but we do not evaluate it.

CS1 focuses strongly on collaborative development of both paper and presentation and therefore attendance is important.

Requirements & Grading

Abstracts, Articles, and Punctuation Quiz 10%

Peer Feedback 15%

Presentation Skills 30%

Written Paper 45%

100% attendance is mandatory. Any necessary absences must be discussed with your instructor, preferably in advance, and any work missed must be made up.  Missing more than three classes (unexcused) will result in a one-letter-grade penalty on the final course grade. Please note that ‘a class’ means 9.45-11.15 or 11.30-13.00.  Missing 9.45-13.00 once equals missing TWO classes.   The ASC forgives absences and late submissions of graded tasks in cases when the SAO informs us that the absence/s is/are officially excused.  Any unexcused late submission will be automatically graded 0.
