Úvod do polární ekologie přináší základní přehled o environmentální biologické diverzitě a adaptacích organismů na prostředí polárních ekosystémů. Seznamuje se všemi základními vědeckými obory, které se uplatňují při ekologickém výzkumu polárních oblastí. Přednášející mají dlouholetou zkušenost s terénním výzkumem v Arktidě i v Antarktidě.
Pokud se nepřihlásí žádný zahraniční student, bude vyučováno v češtině!

Introduction to polar ecology presents a basic overview of environmental/biological diversity and adaptations of organisms to environmental conditions in polar ecosystems. It introduces all basic scientific disciplines involved in ecological research in polar regions. The lecturers have a long-term experience with field research both in the Arctic and Antarctic.

1. Vznik a vývoj polárních oblastí (desková tektonika, ledové epochy, fosilie jako doklady změn klimatu a prostředí). Historie objevování a výzkumu polárních oblastí. DN

2. Střídání glaciálních a interglaciálních období (astronomické a pozemské faktory ovlivňující střídání studených a teplých období), změny oceánické a atmosférické cirkulace, vznik a vývoj zalednění polárních oblastí, proxy data z ledovcových jader, základy glaciologie a typologie ledovců, hydrologický cyklus. DN

3. Klima polárních oblastí (rozložení a cirkulace vzduchových hmot, chody teplot a srážek, ozonová anomálie, mikroklima a vegetační mikroklima polárních území, změny klimatu polárních oblastí, metody studia současného a dřívějšího klimatu). DN + někdo další na mikroklima a vegetaci

4. Horniny a půdy (vznik a vývoj periglaciálního prostředí, permafrost, činná vrstva, podzemní led, periglaciální procesy - regelace, mrazové zvětrávání, třídění a vzdouvání, svahové procesy, působení sněhu a vegetace, půdní krusty, kryptoendolitická společenstva). DN

5. Srovnání ekosystémů arktické a antarktické oblasti (výměna energie mezi mírným pásmem a arktickou/antarktickou oblastí, šíření organismů na odledněná území).

6. Ekologie oceánů a moří polárních oblastí (mořské proudy, polynie, antarktická divergence a konvergence, produktivita mořského polárního ekosystému, bentická a pelagiální společenstva, život v mořském ledu, primární a sekundární producenti polárních moří, paraziti a symbionti mořských bezobratlých a obratlovců).

7. Sladkovodní ekosystémy (jezera, mokřady, potoky a řeky, život na povrchu ledovců, kryokonity, typy jezer v polárních oblastech a jejich geneze, potravní sítě v jezerních ekosystémech a porovnání Arktidy a Antarktidy).

8. Sinice a řasy a jejich adaptace na prostředí polárních ekosystémů (dominantní taxonomické skupiny v jednotlivých typech prostředí, adaptace na extrémní prostředí, psychrofilní a psychrotrofní druhy, endemismus).

9. Vyšší rostliny a jejich adaptace na prostředí polárních oblastí (tundra, hranice lesa, délka vegetační doby, polární poušť, rašeliniště, antarktická rostlinná společenstva, vývoj vegetace v postglaciálu, fytogeografie, morfologické a fyziologické adaptace rostlin).

10. Živočichové a jejich adaptace na prostředí polárních oblastí (průřez hlavními skupinami terestrické, sladkovodní a mořské fauny, metabolické a fyziologické adaptace, potravní pyramidy v různých prostředích, autochtonní - alochtonní zdroje živin, vztahy k primárním producentům a mezi jednotlivými skupinami živočichů v rámci potravních řetězců).

11. Zranitelnost polární přírody a právní ochrana (Antarctic Treaty, Svalbard Treaty - principy ochrany přírody v Arktidě a Antarktidě).

12. Organizace vědeckého výzkumu polárních oblastí. Původní obyvatelé Arktidy.

1. Origins and evolution of polar regions (plate tectonics, glacial periods, fossils as evidence of climatic and environmental changes. History of discovery, exploration and research in the polar regions.

2. Glacial cycles (factors influencing changing of warm and cold periods), changes in oceanic and atmospheric circulation, origin and evolutions of glaciation in polar regions, proxy data from ice cores, fundamentals of glaciology and glacier typology, hydrological cycle.

3. Polar climate (distribution and circulation of air masses, temperature and precipitation courses, ozone anomaly, microclimate and vegetation microclimate, climate change, methods of study of current and past climate).

4. Rocks and soils (origins and evolution of periglacial environment, permafrost, active layer, ground ice, periglacial processes - regelation,  frost weathering, patterned ground, mass movements, influence of snow and vegetation, soil crusts, cryptoendolitic communities).

5. Comparison of Arctic and Antarctic ecosystems (energy exchange between temperate zone and Arctic/Antarctic Region, dispersal of organism to newly deglaciated areas).

6. Ecology of polar oceans and seas (ocean currents, polynias, Antarctic Divergence and Convergence, productivity of polar ocean ecosystem, benthic and pelagic assemblages, life in sea ice, primary and secondary producers of polar seas, parasites and symbionts of invertebrates and vertebrates).

7. Freshwater ecosystems (lakes, seepages, creeks and streams, life on glacial surfaces, cryoconite, lake typology in polar regions and their evolution, food webs in polar lakes, comparison of Arctic and Antarctica).

8. Cyanobacteria and algae and their adaptations to polar environment (dominant taxonomic groups in different habitats, adaptations to extreme environment, psychrophiles and psychrotrophs, endemism).

9. Vascular plants and their adaptations to polar environment (tundra, tree line, length of vegetation period, polar desert, peatbogs, Antarctic plant communities, evolution of vegetation in postglacial period, phytogeography, morphological and physiological adaptations of plants).
