Immunology is an integral part of a set of disciplines focused on understanding the biological nature of humans. The main aim of the course is to acquaint the students with the principles of the functioning of the immune system as a whole, with its role in homeostasis, both under physiological and pathological conditions. The practical implications of immunological research, particularly in the prevention and treatment of a range of diseases, are also emphasized. As graduates of the Faculty of Pharmacy have been successful in both clinical and experimental immunology, this discipline is conceived as one of the options for future career opportunities.<br>

After the completion of the lectures, the course ends with an exam. The exam consists of test questions with the possibility of choosing the correct answer or actively completing the information. The second part of the written test is to write a mini-essay (on one topic from the list of exam questions). This is followed by the oral part of the exam. The assessment of all three parts is comprehensive.

The subject of immunology is an integral part of a set of disciplines focused on understanding the biological nature of humans. The main goal of the course is to introduce students to the principles of the immune system as a whole, its role in homeostasis, both under physiological and pathological conditions.
After completing the course, students will be able to explain and use the following terms in the correct context: lymphocyte, macrophage, dendritic cell, neutrophil, eosinophil, basophil, mast cell, bone marrow, thymus, spleen, lymph nodes, lymphatic vessels, innate immunity, adaptive immunity, phagocytosis, complement system, inflammation, antigen, immunogenicity, antigenic determinant (epitope), hapten, major histocompatibility complex (MHC, HLA), immunoglobulin (IgA, IgD, IgE, IgG, IgM), B-cell receptor (BCR), T-cell receptor (TCR), cytokines, adhesion molecules, costimulatory molecules, primary and secondary immune response, antigen-antibody reaction, serology, immunological memory, autoimmune disease, immunodeficiency (primary, secondary, AIDS), allergy, anaphylaxis, hypersensitivity (types I–IV), transplant immunology (graft rejection), antitumor immunity, immunotherapy.
Learning outcomes:
Based on the acquired knowledge and skills, students will:
ØDescribe the origin, development, and function of immune system cells, define primary and secondary lymphoid organs, and explain the function of lymphatic vessels.
ØCharacterize nonspecific (innate) and specific (adaptive) immunity, including humoral and cellular components, phagocytosis, and the complement system.
ØDefine the terms antigen, immunogenicity, antigenic determinant, and hapten, and describe the major histocompatibility complex (HLA) and its biological significance.
ØExplain the role of immunoglobulins, antibody diversity, and T-cell receptors, antigen-antibody reactions, and the principles of serological methods.
ØDescribe the principles of vaccination, vaccine composition, and the significance of immunological memory.
ØAnalyze immune responses to infections, tumors, and transplanted tissues, the importance of immunological tolerance, and the consequences of its loss.
ØCharacterize cytokines, adhesion molecules, and costimulatory molecules in the immune response and the role of the immune system in maintaining homeostasis.
ØDiscuss immunodeficiencies, autoimmune diseases, allergies, and AIDS, including their diagnosis and general therapeutic approaches.
ØExplain immune mechanisms related to reproduction and pregnancy.
