It is a compulsory study subject that develops the basic knowledge of bioethics acquired in the previous lower years of study. It is to develop ethical knowledge and critical thinking skills. The study is aimed at improving medical-ethical erudition, i.e. it should improve some basic competencies with which professional ethics in contemporary medicine is connected. In particular, it concerns knowledge and skills in the field of bioethics - the teaching therefore deals with the dominant theories in contemporary bioethics, which are principlism (using four basic principles and the ability to balance between these principles), casuistry with a focus on paradigmatic case studies, and a method focused on particular medical-ethical institutes and rules (informed consent, negative reverse, previously expressed wish, etc.). Furthermore, the subject focuses on effective ethical communication between doctor and patient, while appealing to the partnership model of shared decision-making. The subject also works with the so-called narrative approach to bioethics, which should deepen the compassion and empathy of future doctors. Both of the mentioned components should be intended against the possible depersonalization and dehumanization of medicine, which can occur thanks to modern technologies. The main goal of the course is for medical students to enter medical practice sufficiently prepared for the new ethical challenges that modern medicine brings. The subject should help increase the moral competence of medics and improve the ability to navigate in ethically questionable cases. They should familiarize themselves with the most important topics of bioethics, understand the basic concepts in bioethics and get a basic orientation in ethically questionable case studies.
