Otorinolaryngologie, neboli ušní, nosní a krční lékařství je základní lékařský obor. Počátky spadají do poloviny 19. století , kdy dochází k propojení otologie jako chirurgické disciplíny a laryngologie, která byla součástí interní medicíny. Funkční, anatomické I patologické souvislosti zmíněných lokalit s nosními dutinami a hltanem daly vznik oboru ORL. Jako v jednom z prvních medicínských oborů ORL začala využívat endoskopické techniky a operační mikroskop. Chirurgické postupy zaujímají v posledních desetiletích v podstatě celou oblast krku a splanchnokrania a obor často nese přídomek chirurgie hlavy a krku. Znalosti z ORL jsou nepostradatelné pro praktické lékaře a pediatry, neboť se často jako první setkávají s zánětlivými I nádorovými onemocněními v ORL oblasti. V ORL oblasti se take jako první manifestuje řada interních onemocnění. ORL má těsné vazby k neurologii, společnou platformou je otoneurologie, k stomatochirurgii, neurochirurgii, společnou platformou je chirurgie baze lební a oftalmologii. Specifika léčby a rehabilitace pacientů s nedoslýchavostí a hluchotou, poruchami hlasu a řeči, tedy komunikačního procesu jsou středem zájmu foniatrie, která je nástavbovým oborem otorinolaryngologie. Klinika ušní, nosní a krční 2. LF UK se specializuje na dětskou populaci do 19 let, což je přínosem zejména pro budoucí pediatry. Praktické znalosti z dospělé otorinolaryngologie získávají medicí ve spolupráci s klinikami ORL a chirurgie hlavy a krku ve FNM (1. LFUK) a v ÚVN (3. LFUK).

The goal is to teach future physicians the basic knowledge and practical skills in the range of a routine examination of the oral cavity, nose, nasopharynx, soft tissues of the external neck, including the salivary glands and the thyroid gland and basic examination of the ears and assessment the state of hearing. The future physicians must be able to evaluate the symptoms and findings in the context of the overall status of a patient and lay down a working diagnosis, principles of the treatment and further examination procedures. Stress is laid on an understanding of the physiological and developmental peculiarities of children's and adult age. Special consideration is imposed on a group of life threatening diseases and acute course. The basic skills required for maintaining free airways and for intubation are practiced on the models.
