Stručná anotace předmětu 
přednáška: 
Přednáška se zabývá základními tendencemi v procesu formování americké a kanadské literatury od konce Války Severu 
proti Jihu (1865) a vytvoření kanadské Konfederace (1867) do konce 2. světové války. Kombinuje analýzu základních 
historických tendencí vývoje americké a kanadské kultury (dobývání amerického Západu, vznik kulturních regionů, změny 
americké společnosti v tzv. Pozlaceném věku, vliv 1. světové války, vývoj modernismu a důležitých etnických kultur, 
kultura v období velké hospodářské krize) s důrazem na literární díla amerického realismu, naturalismu, modernismu, 
sociálního realismu 30. let 20. stol. a rozvoj afroamerické a americké židovské literatury. Soustředí se také na jejich 
nejvýznamnější představitele, zejména Marka Twaina, Henryho Jamese, Stephena Cranea, Kate Chopin, Willu Cather, Edith 
Wharton, Ezru Pounda, T.S. Eliota, Wallace Stevense, Ernesta Hemingwaye, F.S. Fitzgeralda, Williama Faulknera, Johna 
Steinbecka, aj. Základní kulturní momenty kanadského vývoje zahrnují vznik nacionalismu (ve tvorbě tzv. básníků 
Konfederace) a postupné prosazování realismu a modernismu.

5. Ženská literatura a feminismus ve 2. polovině 19. století a na počátku 20. stol.: Charlotte Perkins 
6. Gilman, Kate Chopin, Willa Cather, Edith Wharton 
7. Modernismus v americké poezii (T.S. Eliot, Ezra Pound, Wallace Stevens, William Carlos Williams aj.) 
8. Modernismus a realismus v americké próze (Ernest Hemingway, F.S. Fitzgerald, John Dos Passos, Sherwood 
Anderson, Sinclair Lewis 
9. William Faulkner a literatura amerického Jihu 
10. John Steinbeck a literatura 30. let 20. století 
11. Kanadská kultura a literatura v období pozdního romantismu, realismu a modernismu. 
seminář: 
Analýza vybraných kanonických děl americké literatury 19. a 20. století se zaměřuje jak na jednotlivé texty, tak na širší 
otázky: historický a politický kontext, společenské a kulturní změny. Hlavní důraz se klade na tradici amerického 
vypravěčství, realismus, naturalismus, modernismus a sociálně orientovanou literaturu 30. let 20. století i na vznik etnických 
a regionálních literatur. Důraz se v jednotlivých seminářích bude měnit podle odbornosti vyučujících, jako společné texty 
pro podrobnou analýzu byly vybrány: Mark Twain, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Kate Chopin, The Awakening, 
Henry James, The Ambassadors, William Faulkner, As I Lay Dying, Wallace Stevens, výbor z The Norton Anthology, T.S.
