This course aims to introduce students to the world of thought in medieval Northern Europe. Based on extant texts (ranging from historiography and saga literature to mythological texts), the course focuses on analysing the medieval concept of reality, religious images and ethical principles. It also aims to develop students' critical approach to foreign-language secondary literature.

Kurz si klade za cíl seznámit posluchače s myšlenkovým světem středověkého Severu. Východiskem budou dochované texty, na jejichž základě se budeme ptát na tehdejší pojetí reality, náboženské představy i etické principy. Metodologickým cílem je pak kritická práce studentů s cizojazyčnou sekundární literaturou. Kurz Svět staroseverské literatury II bude kurz zaměřen na podrobnější analýzu eddických písní a na ně navazující zpracování téže látky, a to jak v oblasti mytologie, tak hrdinské tematiky. Účast na kurzu I není podmínkou.
