The aim of the course is to give a basic overview of current pharmacology. Students are introduced to the basic concepts of the field and get a basic knowledge of special pharmacology. The main emphasis is placed on the pharmacotherapy of the locomotive organs, which physiotherapists commonly encounter in their practice.

Learning Outcomes:

The aim of the course is to provide students with the knowledge, skills and general competencies so that after the completion of the course the students:

  • are acquainted with the characteristics of the basic group of drugs and medicines used in medicine
  • are acquainted with the pharmacological effects of commonly used drugs in patients encountered in the practice of a physiotherapist, as well as side effects, indications and contraindications

1. Pharmacodynamics – receptor and non-receptor mechanisms of drug action, agonists, antagonists, affinity, efficacy

2. Pharmacokinetics – rout of drug administration, ADME – absorption, distribution, metabolism, excretion

3. Drug complications – adverse effects, repeated drug administration, drug interactions (with other drugs, food)

4. Sympathetic agonists and blockers

5. Parasympathetic agonists and antagonists

6. Peripheral and central myorelaxants

7. Pharmacotherapy of hypertension

8. Pharmacotherapy of angina pectoris, hypolipidemics

9. Drugs affecting CNS – hypnotics, sedatives, anxiolytics

10. Drugs affecting CNS – antidepressants, antipsychotics, psychostimulants
