Learning outcomes of the course unit The subject acquaints students with physical laws of biological phenomena. Emphasis is placed on the ability to apply general physical principles in the medical environment. It is an understanding of the principle of both investigative and therapeutic procedures, primarily of the musculoskeletal system, which are based on physical principles. It is necessary to monitor the development of new technologies that appear in clinical practice, such as imaging (ultrasound, doppler, computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging). The biophysical part contains the following thematic scopes: the system aspect, mechanics, mechanics of liquids, vibrations, acoustics, thermodynamics, solutions and colloids, electricity and magnetism, optics, ionisation radiation. The biomechanical part of the course contains fundamental concepts; the movement system; human movement from the perspective of kinematics; dynamics of human movement; mechanical characteristics of tissues; locomotion, manipulation and postural stability.
Aim of the course -
Last update: doc. Ing. Monika Šorfová, Ph.D. (25.09.2023)

The aim of the course is to provide students in the orthotics-prosthetics field with basic knowledge of biophysics, which will be used in the subsequent biomechanical part to explain the core principles of the biomechanics of the human locomotor system.

Skills
• The student defines physical quantities, recognizes quantities according to the used mark and units.
• Calculates the values of the specified quantities in different units.
• Explain the difference between solid, liquid and gaseous matter and their possibilities of use in interaction with the human organism.
• Distinguishes between mechanical and electromagnetic waves, understands the principle of their descriptive quantities.
• It characterizes individual basic examination and diagnostic procedures using various physical phenomena.
• Describes the main influence of individual physical phenomena on specific components of the human system

Competence
• Is able to assess and compare the results of client examinations using various biophysical methods.
• Uses acquired knowledge and skills to make decisions about preventing damage to the organism by applying physical phenomena to clients
