The aim of the course is to deepen the understanding of modern culture and to show its place in the life of modern society and how it can be used for teaching history. The lecture will show Czech culture in a broader international context. The theme of the lecture series will be "Swing as a socio-political phenomenon of modern culture". In its framework, the audience will learn how not only this music, but also the subcultural styles that emerged from it, came to interact with "big history" and thus into political contexts. Thus, through musical and film examples, the lecture will not only offer a glimpse into the history of swing music, but also the development of the dances associated with it, including contemporary attacks against them. Attention will also be paid to the emergence of youth subcultures associated with modern music, both in the Czech milieu and abroad (American zootsuiters, French Zazous, German Swing-Boys, Austrian Schlurfs). The lecture will also include a demonstration of jazz dances by dance professionals. Participation in the lectures and a written paper of three standard pages on the chosen topic are prerequisites for credit.

The aim of the lecture is to introduce the audience to one of the phenomena of modern culture - swing music and the dance and subcultural style that stems from it. The history of jazz music and its encounter with politics – the rejection of this music in Europe, the rejection of jazz dances and related subcultures, and the youth protest movements growing out of jazz in different parts of the world (USA, France, Germany, Austria) will be presented in the form of interpretation and musical examples.
