Students will gain an overview of the starting points and approaches in supporting individuals with intellectual disabilities in the context of psychosocial and cognitive peculiarities. They will learn the basic terminology and get acquainted with the etiology of intellectual disabilities. The aim of the course is to develop students' critical and independent thinking, to describe the changes in the position of people with intellectual disabilities in society, their causes and consequences for the theory and practice of special education and other helping professions. The course will consist of the following topics: 1. The changing position of people with intellectual disabilities in society in an international context, facilitators of change; implications for theory, practice and research. 2. The concept of intellectual disability (terminology, classification, etiology). 3. Legal status of a person with a disability respectively with intellectual disability, human rights dimension. 5. Psychosocial, educational and communicational specifics of intellectual disability. 6. Bases, principles and selected strategies of support for a person with intellectual disability, quality of life, quality of support. 7. Current issues related to the education of pupils with intellectual disability.

The student will bring to the exam:

      1. Annotations of two articles from journal literature, which deal with the issue of disadvantaged people with intellectual disability. Articles will not be older than three years.

      2. Review of one professional publication (excluding required literature).

Then take a written test.

Psychopedia as a scientific field of special education. Human rights of people with intellectual disability. History - important people. Mental retardation-terminology. Characteristics of people with intellectual disability. Brief characteristics of the most common syndromes associated with mental retardation. Family and child with intellectual disability. Early care and intervention - parent clubs and associations. Support system for people with intellectual disability - sheltered workplaces, supported employment, sheltered housing. Home for the intellectually handicapped. Preschool education of pupils with intellectual disability (framework educational plan, school educational plan, class educational plans, ..). Educational process at primary school (adjusted outputs) and at special primary school - Framework educational plan Part 1 and 2, school educational plans. Educational process at vocational school, practical school, activation centers, evening schools. Adulthood of people with intellectual disability. Voluntary organizations, civic associations, etc. working for the benefit of people with intellectual disability. Current issues related to the education of children, pupils and students with intellectual disability.
