The course, which is designed for the future authors of Bc theses, aims at developing the productive and receptive skills associated with academic writing. It focuses on a critical approach to the sources, editing, and the basics of methodology and ethics of the disciplines which the students will explore in their Bc theses.

5. Socio-cultural research.
6. The phases of writing an academic text (the process approach).
7. The literature and sources.

Cílem kurzu zaměřeného na budoucí autory bakalářských prací je vytvářet a dále rozvíjet jak produktivní tak i receptivní schopnosti spojené s akademickým stylem psaní. Kurz klade důraz na zefektivnění schopnosti kritického přístupu ke zdrojům, strukturování, editování a základů metodiky a etiky jednotlivých disciplín zkoumaných v bakalářských pracích.

1. Specifika akademického psaní v angličtině – zaměření, cíl, motivace, etika.
2. Struktura akademických textů, argumentace.
3. Základy literárního výzkumu.
4. Základy lingvistického výzkumu.
5. Základy společensko-kulturního výzkumu.
6. Etapy psaní akademického textu – procesuální vnímání.
7. Práce se zdroji.
8. Citační styly – MLA.

10. Akademická slovní zásoba – specifika.

The main goal of the seminar is to prepare students for exploring a novel topic individually and independently.
The seminar builds students’ awareness of the literature, sources, methods and materials which they will rely on when writing their Bc thesis, and of the features of academic writing. During the semester, the students will select the topic of their Bc thesis, contact the potential supervisor, and formulate the description of the thesis.

Cílem semináře je připravit studenta pro samostatné a nezávislé zpracování dosud nezkoumaného tématu.
Po absolvování semináře bude mít student povědomí o literatuře, zdrojích, metodách a materiálu, které bude v práci využívat, a o jazyce a zásadách tvorby akademického textu. V průběhu semestru si student si zvolí téma bakalářské práce, kontaktuje potenciálního vedoucího práce a připraví návrh zadání práce.

1. The basic steps of preparing and writing the Bc thesis. Selecting the field (literature, linguistics, cultural studies, translation) and the topic of the thesis. Formulating the description of the thesis and the assignment. The structure of the Bc thesis. Research questions and hypotheses. Sources and literature.
2. Academic writing: the structure of the text, language, strategies. Working with sources, citation guidelines.
3. Students’ individual consultations with the potential Bc thesis supervisors, researching the literature, selection of a suitable topic, formulation of the thesis assignment. Preparing the presentation of the Bc project.
4. Presentation of the selected Bc thesis topics.

1. Základní kroky přípravy a zpracování bakalářské práce. Volba tématu (zaměření práce na lingvistiku, literaturu, kulturní studia nebo překlad) a příprava zadání. Struktura bakalářské práce. Výzkumné otázky a hypotézy. Vyhledávání zdrojů.
2. Odborný text: struktura, jazyk, strategie. Práce se zdroji.

The students are required to
present the topic of their Bc thesis at the seminar (the general field of the thesis – literature, linguistics, culture studies, or translation – has to be selected by the end of the 9th week of the semester, and entered in Moodle),
submit a written proposal of the Bc thesis assignment (one week before the end of the summer term examination period in September at the latest)
attendance of the Student conference (online presence is allowed: March 16, online:https://cuni-cz.zoom.us/j/95692919793, Meeting ID: 956 9291 9793)

Podmínky získání zápočtu:
- prezentace zvoleného tématu bakalářské práce na semináři (zaměření práce na lingvistiku, literaturu, kulturní studia nebo překlad ohlásí studenti nejpozději během 9. týdne semestru prostřednictvím Moodlu)
- odevzdání písemného návrhu zadání bakalářské práce (nejpozději týden před koncem zkouškového období po LS v září)
- pasivní účast na studentské konferenci - 16.3. , na sekci věnované bakalářským pracem (počítá se i online:https://cuni-cz.zoom.us/j/95692919793, Meeting ID: 956 9291 9793)
