This course aims to give the students a general outline of the most significant events in American literature, focusing largely, but not exclusively, on canonical authors. These seminars complement lectures which reside in presenting a particular literary movement, including its social and cultural background. These are then followed by a close reading session which focuses on the selected seminar texts (short stories, plays, novels/extracts etc.).

V přednáškové části se student obeznámí se základní vývojovou linií americké literatury od 17. až po konec 19. století, včetně historického pozadí. Na přednášku navazuje řízené čtení zadaných ilustrativních ukázek americké prózy a poezie v původním znění.

Requirements: 80% attendance (2 unexplained absences are permissible); A short reflective essay (600 words minimum).
Exam procedure: 1) The student picks the topic and has 15 minutes to assemble his or her thoughts and jot down notes on a piece of paper which s/he can then use during the presentation. 2) The student gives a short verbal presentation on the topic of his or her choice (8-20 minutes). The teacher should not interrupt the student's presentation for the first two minutes. 3) The teacher gives feedback on the student's written performance (essay). 4) The teacher announces the grade.

Podmínky pro splnění studijních povinností
Požadavky k zápočtu: 80% účast na seminářích (tj. povolené jsou 2 neomluvené absence), velmi krátká reflektivní esej (minimum 600 slov) - pokud student prokazuje velmi kvalitní přípravu během celého semestru, lze tuto povinnost prominout.
Ústní zkouška vychází z profilu bakalářské státnice (viz https://webkajl.pedf.cuni.cz/documents/exams/szzk/SZZ-Bc-nova-akreditace-okruhy.pdf, str. 3).
Protokol:
1) Student si vybere téma a má 15 minut na to, aby si utřídil myšlenky a napsal poznámky na papír, které pak může použít při prezentaci. 2) Student přednese krátkou ústní prezentaci na zvolené téma (8-20 minut). První dvě minuty by zkoušející neměl tuto prezentaci přerušovat. 3) Učitel poskytne zpětnou vazbu k písemnému vystoupení studenta (eseji). 4) Učitel oznámí známku.
