The course explores the ways of assessing proficiency in language skills and areas of the language system. Students will analyse tests and their typologies with regard to the purpose of testing. Various psychometric parameters of tests are investigated (e.g., validity, reliability, sensitivity, objectivity, difficulty). An insight into the process of validation, standardization and calibration is provided, so that students understand parameters of standardized tests. Particular attention is paid to the evaluation of the Maturita examination and its modifications for students with specific learning needs. Students will analyse, assess and evaluate essays and tests of Maturita candidates in accordance with the relevant test specifications. Themes: • Typology and assessment of tests; principles of test evaluation and construction • Objectivity, validity and reliability; item analysis of test results • Sensitivity, difficulty and timing • Standards and the process of standardization, calibration; the Maturita exam and other standardized examinations • Assessing language production • Assessing language comprehension • Assessing the areas of the English language system • Modifications and compensations for students with specific learning needs and disorders; aptitude, language aptitude tests and diagnostics
