The aim of the course is to acquaint students with the basic issues of the Modern English lexicology. The course addresses the following major areas: the morphological structure of words, word-formation processes, lexical semantics, stylistic stratification of the lexicon and the processes of borrowing. Although the primary perspective will be synchronic, where relevant, the most important historical (linguistic, social-cultural) milestones in the development of the English language will be taken into account. Téma 1: Basic terminology. Characteristic features of the English vocabulary. Téma 2: Morphological structure of words; major and minor word-formation processes. Téma 3: Historical development of the English vocabulary. Téma 4: Collocation. Téma 5: Set expressions. Téma 6: Word meaning; paradigmatic sense relations; figures of speech. Téma 7: Stylistic stratification of the English vocabulary.

Cílem kurzu je obeznámit studenty s lexikologií moderní angličtiny především ze synchronního hlediska s přihlédnutím ke klíčovým diachronním aspektům zasazeným do dobového socio-kulturního kontextu. Pozornost je věnována morfematické struktuře, slovotvorným procesům, lexikální sémantice, stylistické stratifikaci slovní zásoby a externím vlivům obohacování slovní zásoby. Téma 1: Klíčové pojmy v lexikologii a základní charakteristika anglického slovní zásoby. Téma 2: Morfematická struktura slov; hlavní a vedlejší slovotvorné procesy. Téma 3: Historický vývoj anglické slovní zásoby. Téma 4: Kolokace. Téma 5: Frazeologismy. Téma 6: Slovní význam a paradigmatické významové vztahy; jazykové figury. Téma 7: Stylistické rozvrstvení slovní zásoby.

 An exam - a written test. Students have to achieve the minimum of 70%. There are two resits. In order to take the exam, students have to complete the obligatory exercises by a set date.

K úspěšnému absolvování zkoušky musí student dosáhnout minimální hranice 70%.  Zkouška má podobu písemného testu a je založena na tématech diskutovaných v přednáškách a seminářích.  Student má dva opravné pokusy.  Připuštění ke zkoušce je podmíněno splněním povinných cvičení.

Week 1  Introduction to lexicology; key terms (word-morpheme-lexeme-sign). Lexical and grammatical system; open and closed word classes. 

Week 2 Morphological structure of words. Word formation – affixation.

Week 3 Word formation – compounding, conversion.

Week 4 Minor word-formation processes (blending, back-formation, clipping, abbreviations, acronyms)

Week 5 Historical development of the English word-stock. Borrowing and etymology; types of loans and the process of domestication. Linguistic characterology of the English word-stock. 

Week 6 Syntagmatic sense relations. Collocation.  

Week 7 Set expressions (e.g. phrasal verbs, idioms, proverbs, sayings, catch-phrases). Transparent vs opaque words.

Week 8 Word Meaning. Meaning and form (arbitrariness and motivation). Types of meaning (denotation, connotation).  

Week 9 Paradigmatic sense relations (synonymy, oppositeness, meronymy, hyperonymy-hyponymy)

Week 10 Polysemy. Figures of speech (metaphor, metonymy, synecdoche, personification).

Week 11 Word-stock Layers. Registers. Style. Centre and periphery of the English word-stock. 

Week 12 Revision.

1.  Active participation in seminars - execercises, discussions, homework presentation, study of relevant literature. The topics are based on the syllabus and homework is cheched every week.

2.  The seminar paper takes the form of tasks and exercises to be done at home; the topics reflect the syllabus and the issues dealt with during the lecture and seminars. The completion of these tasks will be required by a set date, the deadline will be announed at the beginning of the course. Participation in these tasks is a condition for a successful comletion of the whole course and a prerequisite for taking the exam.

1. Aktivní účast v seminářích  - plnění zadanýc úkolů a diskuse v rámci semináře; samostatné příprava, práce s relevantní doporučenou literaturou a následná ústní prezentace zadaných úkolů. Konkrétní podoba zadání samostatné práce se specificky váže ke jednotlivým tématům sylabu kurzu a je kontrolována průběžně každý týden během seminářů.  

2. Seminární práce má formu samostnatně plněných cvičení a úkolů mimo semináře reflektujících témata probíraná v rámci přednášky a procvičovaná v semináři. Kontrola splnění proběhne ke stanovenému datu - časový plán a konkrétní zadání budou studentům sděleny v prvních týdnech výuky zimního semestru. Nesplnění těchto podmínek má za následek nepřipuštění ke zkoušce.

3. Zkouška - písemný test. Minimální hranice, kterou student musí dosáhnout, je 70%. Student má dva opravné pokusy.
