At the level of contemporary knowledge, the course presents the history and current direction of the concepts of support for people with disabilities. It is mainly focused on the constitution and development of special education as a scientific field with its interdisciplinary links. Its aim is to acquaint students with the world of people with disabilities and their special needs with emphasis on traditional and newly assigned target groups of special education. Socialization from a historical perspective, integration, inclusion and co-education as a process will be presented. The emphasis will be placed on parental care and education as an important component. Students will be acquainted with current special educational literature.

- Profiling personalities of the field

- Historiography of the field and its subfields, periodization of the development of people with disabilities in the Czech Republic

- Definition of special education as a scientific and study field and its position in the system of sciences

- Important legal norms and current legislation governing the status of people with disadvantages (children, pupils, students)

- Current international trends in the support of people with disadvantages

- State policy of support for people with disabilities

- The issue of employing people with disadvantages, their current position in the labor market

- The importance of the non-profit sector and activities of non-governmental non-profit organizations
