The symbol as a way to a different reality The period from 1880s to the 1st decade of the 20th century as the crucial moment of the conflict between tradition and modernity. The conflict between the naturalism and other forms of the aestetic conservatism (E. Zola, M. Barres, P. Bourget) and the symbolism. The introduction to the theory of the symbol. Interconnection of the symbolism and the decadence (S. Mallarmé, P. Valéry, A. Gide, M. Schwob, J.-K. Huysmans, P. Louys, J. Péladan). The aesthetics of the fin-de-siecle, the dandyism, the aesthetisation of the morbidity and the decadence. The break between periods (revolutionary scientific discoveries of the turn of the 19th and the 20th century) and the shift to aesthetic innovations (M. Proust, G. Appolinaire).
