The aim of the course is to introduce the students to some basic approaches to the study of meaning in Linguistics and related fields (primarily Cognitive Science and Psychology). The primary focus will be on word meaning (lexical semantics), although sentential semantics and pragmatics will be introduced as well. Theoretical topics covered include categorization, acquisition of concepts, figures of speech, mental spaces, or lexical semantic change. Various semantic domains will be examined in connection with these topics but two will be treated in depth from various perspectives: the semantics of everyday concepts, and the semantics of space and motion.

Cílem kurzu je seznámit studenty se základními přístupy ke studiu významu v lingvistice a souvisejících oborech (především kognitivní vědě a psychologii). Pozornost bude především věnována slovnímu významu, vedle větné sémantiky a pragmatiky. Teoretická témata, která budou diskutována zahrnují kategorizaci, vytváření konceptů, figury řeči, mentální prostor nebo sémantická změna. Vedle jiných sémantických oblastí budou dvě témata studována hlouběji a to sémantika každodenních konceptů a sémantika prostoru a pohybu.
