The Romantic Movement. German Romanticism and European context (the re-discovery of nature, the return to the past, the freedom of literary forms etc.). Philosophical and artistic theories. First and second group of romanticists. The European importance of German Romanticism. The inspiring influence upon the Czech National Revival.

Cílem kurzu je seznámit studenty s vybranými díly německy psané literatury z období romantismu, biedermeieru a realismu. Důraz se klade na literárně estetické a kulturně historické aspekty probíraných děl. Obsah kurzu: Evropský kontext německého romantismu, politické a historické pozadí, filozofické základy, romantické estetické teorie a žánry. Představitelé jednotlivých etap: bratři Schlegelové, Novalis, Wackenroder, Tieck, Brentano, Arnim, bratři Grimmové, Eichendorff, Hoffmann, Chamisso, Fouqué, tzv. Švábská škola. Biedermeier, lyrika: Mörike, Droste-Hülshoff, próza: Gotthelf, Stifter, drama: vídeňské lidové divadlo (Raimund, Nestroy), Grillparzer, Hebbel. Realismus, charakteristika epochy: politické pozadí (revoluční rok 1848, nacionalismus, socialismus), společenské otázky (ženská emancipace), filosofické směry (positivismus, materialismus, marxismus, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer), literární provoz (čtenářstvo a vzdělání). Realismus v literatuře: základní rysy a teorie (Vischer, Heyse), román (Freytag, Keller, Raabe, Fontane), novela a vyprávění (Storm, Keller, Meyer), lyrika (Storm, Meyer, Liliencron).
