Chateaubriand - nové pojetí katolictví. Krystalizace základních romantických topoi: krajina jako zrcadlo duše, osamělost rozervaného jedince, láska jako metafora ztraceného ráje. Rozkvět černého (gotického) románu a iniciační tematika. Romantický sklon k ezoterismům a hermetismům všeho druhu. Repertoár typických romantických motivů a jejich symbolika: noc, sen, cit, vášeň, vyvrženost, šílenství, svoboda, vzpoura. Pokračování této linie: Baudelaire a subverze tradiční estetiky - Květy zla. Revolta proti maloměšťáctví - Rimbaud, Verlaine. Les Jeune-France: Borel, Bertrand, O´Neddy. Bohémství, dandysmus, básníkova "prokletost" - literární, sociologické i kulturní aspekty těchto jevů.
