The course aims at providing the necessary knowledge of dynamic meteorology, atmospheric thermodynamics as well as the cloud and precipitation physics to understand the physical behaviour of atmospheric systems. It is suitable for the students of geography, who finished the basic course of meteorology and climatology and who are interested in a deeper understanding of mesoscale meteorological processes and phenomena in midlatitudes.
The course treats the air motions throughout the atmosphere, which are governed by the laws of classical fluid dynamics, the relevant moist air thermodynamics, and the basic principles of cloud and precipitation microphysics. The larger-scale physics of clouds and cloud systems, which are the main precipitation producers in midlatitudes, is summarized. Special emphasis is put on the discussion of the time scale and space scale of meteorological phenomena as well as on the interaction of atmospheric processes of various scales. Present methods of numerical weather forecasting are also briefly discussed.
