The lecture provides an overview of the ecology of tropical ecosystems, with an emphasis on functional and evolutionary aspects. It deals with basic general and evolutionary ecological themes in the context of tropical ecosystems and marginally with the problems of tropical biodiversity protection and methodology of ecological research in the tropics.

Topics
1. What makes the tropics interesting and special - abiotic and biotic characteristics of tropical ecosystems compared to the Czech lowlands
2. Tropical biodiversity - where it came from and how it is maintained
3. Tree Violets etc. - the nature of tropical vegetation
4. Herbivores, predators and parasites - upper levels of food net in tropical ecosystems
5. Fig wasps and other oddities - tropical specialties in interspecific relationships
6. Ecosystems of tropical landscape - a guide for travelers to foreign countries
7. Biodiversity par excellence - how tropical forests and coral reefs work
8. No all tropics are the same - comparative ecology of four continents
9. Tropical walk along ecological gradients - altitude and latitude
10. What happened on tropical islands - evolution and ecology in "nature laboratories"
11. Human as an ecological factor in tropical nature - a little of applied anthropology
12. Will they survive the year of 3000? - civilization development in the tropics and nature conservation
13. When will we finally understand the ecology of the tropics? - how and what is being studied and will be studied in the tropics
