The course is focused on water pollution and related contaminants, eutrophication, wastewaters and wastewater treatment technologies. Furthermore, the course deals with water and water source protection, and related legislation. The course also includes an excursion to a wastewater treatment plant.
Basic orientation in hydrochemistry (course MO550P72 Hydrochemistry) is recommended. Treatment of drinking water is further elaborated in a separate course MO550P46 Groundwater and Surface Water Treatment.

During the course, students work out a set of homework, which follows the lectures and broadens the studied themes. The course is finished with a written exam from the basic knowledge of the course. The conditions for passing an exam are: presence at the lectures (max 3 absences are allowed), presence at the excursion, finished homework and written (or oral) exam.
