The lecture "Biochemical pharmacology" is aimed for students of natural sciences who are interested in drugs. It is
focused on comprehension of basic general principles of drug actions as well as on mechanism of action of most
widely used drugs in practise. To successfully pass this course basic knowledge of human physiology,
biochemistry and microbiology is required.

General principles (introduction and definition; sites of action - receptors; concentration-response relationships; absorption, distribution, metabolism and elimination; drug delivery approaches).

Peripheral autonomic nervous system.

Drugs affecting cardiac function, blood pressure, renal function (physiology and pathophysiology of cardiovascular system; drugs affecting cardiac contractile force; calcium antagonists; vasodilators;

antidysrhytmic agents; antihypertensive drugs; diuretics).

Drugs affecting behavior, psychotic state, pain, sensation, sleep (physiology of CNS, antipsychotic agents, drugs for affective disorders, drugs to treat anxiety and related disorders, drugs for seizure disorders (epilepsies), pain control with narcotic analgesics, antiinflammatory drugs, nonnarcotic

analgesics, pain control with general and local anesthetics, drugs for the treatement of movement disorders).

Agents that kill invaders (principles of antimicrobial use; bacterial cell wall inhibitors; inhibitors of bacterial ribosomal actions; bacterial folate antagonists; other antibacterial agents; antimycobacterial agents; antifungal agents; antiviral drugs; antiseptics and disinfectants).

Drugs affecting respiratory function; histamine and its blockers.

Oral contraceptives.
