A mass spectrometry course in which advanced topics important to modern analytical and bioanalytical chemistry are discussed. The lectures follow the Fundamentals of Mass Spectrometry (MC230P83). In the course, ionization processes and methods of ion analysis in the gas phase will be explained in more detail. Attention will be paid to high-resolution and ion mobility analyzers. New fragmentation methods, including UVPA and EAD, will be discussed, especially from the point of view of structural analysis of organic (bio)molecules. One of the lectures will focus on inorganic mass spectrometry. Methods of imaging mass spectrometry will be presented. "Omics," i.e., detailed analyses of biomolecules within the framework of metabolomics, lipidomics, and proteomics, will be discussed in depth. An important part of the course will also be the topic of mass spectrometric analysis of biological drugs and methods of structural analysis of proteins and protein complexes. The lecture will conclude with an excursion into the history of mass spectrometry and an outlook on its future direction. If epidemiological measures excluding face-to-face teaching are in force, the lectures will take place interactively online using Google Meets or ZOOM.

After completing the course, the students will describe the processes occurring during ionizing organic and inorganic compounds in detail. They will explain how to use advanced mass spectrometric ion fragmentation and separation techniques. They will assess the suitability of omics and imaging techniques for mass spectrometric analysis of biological samples. They will describe methods for structural analysis of proteins and analysis of biological drugs.
