The semestral course provides detailed knowledge of chromosome biology. Particular attention is given to molecular aspects of chromosome organization and function, interphase cytogenetics, karyokinesis, chromosome and genome rearrangements, evolution of sex chromosomes, and karyotype evolution. Auditory is introduced also into various cytogenetic techniques including recent advances in molecular cytogenetics and electron microscopy of chromosomes. Course is complemented by basic survey of human, clinical and oncological cytogenetics.
Associated practical course from cytogenetics is focused on methods of basic cytogenetics, namely production of chromosome preparations from plant and animal tissues, banding techniques, and detection of nucleolus organizer regions by silver staining. Obtained mitotic and meiotic preparations are evaluated. Final excursion into laboratory of human cytogenetics is focused on techniques of molecular cytogenetics as well as computer analysis of chromosome images.
