This course will provide you with detailed information on bryophytes (liverworts, hornoworts, mosses). The course is organized as a "workshop" in which the theoretical part is combined with the practical part. The course is not traditionally divided into lecture and practicum.

We will focus on the morphology, phylogeny, physiology and biogeography of bryophytes. We will look at the main groups of bryophytes and get a detailed introduction to the major families and genera of the Central European bryoflora. We will also touch on the history of the discipline in the world and in our country, get introduced to the basic bryological literature, and review the main disciplinary impact journals and some of the current bryological departments. There will be two special sessions: 1) a "journal club", where we will study together several selected articles from the field and discuss them afterwards; 2) a half-day bryological excursion to the surroundings of Prague.

Ecology will take a back seat in this course in favour of "Ecology of bryophytes and lichens - MB120P64".

It is recommended that you first take the course "Botany of nonvascular plants" before enrolling in this "Bryology" course.
