The course offers a sociological perspective on the social, economic and political context of cross-border migration. The conflicts and cultural changes that accompany migration open a debate on the legitimacy, values and norms of host societies. The intensity of these conflicts suggests that cross-border migration is part of processes that involve the creation and maintenance of cultural, ethnic, political and group identities and the control of territory. Migration thus indirectly tests existing patterns of social belonging, institutions and boundaries. The implications of migration and migrants' activities reveal the limitations of classical sociological concepts, i.e. society, social mobility and social integration.
