In the summer semester, lectures are focused on the epidemiology of periodontal disease, etiopathogenesis of the disease and therapy.

Prerequisites: obligatory subject of the 1st year, Preclinical Dentistry III, Prosthetic Technology.

Results:

  1. The student acquires theoretical knowledge of the etiopathogenesis of periodontal diseases.
  2. The student becomes familiar with the basic procedures of periodontal disease therapy.  
  3. The student will acquire basic practical skills in the examination and treatment of periodontal disease.
  4. The student will gain an understanding of the prognosis of periodontal disease and the impact of periodontal disease on the overall health of the patient.

Credit

Credit will be awarded to a student who:

  1. has properly completed the practical training in a given semester (any absence must be properly compensated),
  2. has demonstrated sufficient knowledge during the continuous examination,
  3. passes the credit test with at least 75%. In the event of failure to achieve at least 75% in the test, an oral examination in the scope of this subject will follow.

The lectures complement the required literature. The lectures highlight the minimum knowledge in the field that is a prerequisite for passing the exam.

  1. Etiology and pathogenesis of plaque induced periodontal disease (microorganisms, inflammatory and immunological response of the organism to the presence of periodontal microorganisms, environmental and local factors). (Slezak 3)
  2. Epidemiology of periodontal disease. (Radochova 1)
  3. Clinical singns and forms of plaque induced gingivitis and periodontitis, staging and grade of periodontitis. (Radochova 2)
  4. Principles of periodontal treatment, healing of periodontal lesion. Evaluation of the treatment effectiveness.  (Slezak 3)
  5. Therapy of periodontitis – practical guidelines. (Radochova 1)
  6. Therapy of periodontitis – active phase. (Radochova 2)

Practical classes take place at the Department of Dentistry of the Faculty of Medicine of the Charles University in Hradec Králové. Students participate in patient examination, diagnosis and treatment under the guidance of a dentist. 

 Content of practical classes:

  1.  Examination of patient with periodontitis
  2.  X-ray examination of the periodontal tissues, evaluation of the findings.
  3.  Diagnosis, treatment plan, staging and grading of periodontitis
  4.  Oral hygiene instruction and motivation
  5.  Removal of the subgingival calculus and plaque with hand instruments and with devices. 

Note: In order to participate in the practical training at the Department of Dentistry of the Faculty of Medicine of the Charles University in Hradec Králové, you need to change into white clothes and you also need slippers for the hospital and a student ID card.
