Tissue engineering is a multidisciplinary field that combines materials engineering with biological sciences to create products that can be used to support regeneration or replace tissues or organs. Students will be briefly introduced to the history of the field; the basic principles of tissue engineering will be discussed, the key components used in its development will be described (materials, cells...) and the problems and challenges accompanying this development will be mentioned (biocompatibility, vascularisation, molecular signalling...). Examples of current developments and applications and some technical aspects (cell and 2D/3D tissue culture) will also be discussed.
